Guys, we are almost done with the Learn How to Crochet for beginners series! We’ve gone through so many different stitches, and if you’ve been making the Cake Slice Coaster with this series, then you’re almost done. So far we’ve covered yarn weights & hook sizes, how to hold your yarn, chain stitch, the slip knot, single crochet, double crochet, half double crochet, switching yarn colors, and triple crochet. Phew, so much! Today I’ll be teaching you one of my favorite stitches, the shell stitch. I love using this stitch as a decorative edge on a project, such as with the Cake Slice Coaster pictured above. It’s also a fun stitch to use to make those fun mermaid blankets you see on Pinterest. Let’s get started!
How to Shell Stitch
1. (Before we begin, if you’re making the Cake Slice Coaster pattern, this post covers row 9.) To begin the shell stitch, you start by chaining 2 and turning your piece.
2. Once you’ve turned your piece, sc (single crochet) 1.
3. Then you will yarn over to prepare to do a double crochet. Skip one stitch, and insert you needle into the stitch after it to do a double crochet.
4. In the same stitch as the double crochet you just did, double crochet 3 for a total of four double crochets in the same stitch.
5. Skip 1 stitch, and single crochet in the one after it.
6. Then you repeat steps 3-5 *skip 1, double crochet 4 in the same stitch, skip 1, and single crochet* to the end of the row. The end result will be a row of scallops that look like half shells.
You’ve noww learned all of the crochet stitches in this series! We just have one more post in the series that will be covering how to finish up your project and weave in ends. Thank you for joining me for this series! Can’t wait to finish up this project with you.
Happy stitching,
~Claire
