Welcome back maker to the Learn How to Crochet for Beginners Series! We are nearing the end of series, and the stitches we are learning. Just three more techniques to learn, and then you’ll be ready to start your crochet journey with confidence along with completing your first crochet project if you’ve been following along with the Cake Slice Coaster pattern. Today we’ll be learning the triple crochet stitch, which is the stitch that adds the most height per row in your crochet projects. It is the middle layer of the Cake Slice Coaster pattern. Triple crochet isn’t used very frequently in crochet patterns, but is still a very useful stitch to learn how to do. Let’s go ahead and get started on it!
How To Triple Crochet
1. (Before we start, if you’re following along with the Cake Slice Coaster pattern, we will be covering row 4.) When you are crocheting a row of triple crochets, you always start by chaining 3, and then turning if you’re working off of a crochet project involving rows.
2. Once you’ve turned your project, begin the stitch by yarning over twice. This is one more yarn over than the double crochet.
3. Then, insert your hook into the first stitch, yarn over again, and pull the yarn through the stitch.
4. You’ll now have 4 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through the first two loops on your hook.
5. There will be three loops on your hook. Similar to the last step, yarn over and pull through two loops.
6. Now you have two loops left on your hook. Yarn over and pull through the last two loops.
7. Congrats, you’ve made your first triple crochet! The finished triple crochet will look like this.
Just like that, you know how to triple crochet! You can now use this in any crochet project you want. We only have two parts left in this series, so keep your eye out for them! The next part will be covering how to do the shell stitch, which is the top part of the Cake Slice Coaster pattern.
