With spring and summer approaching quickly, it’s time for some of my favorite flowers to be in bloom, including the sunflower! Sunflowers are some of my favorite flowers, and have this magical affect on me that makes me happy every time I see them. My house was severely lacking in the flower and spring decor department, which means that it’s about time to create a crochet pattern for it!

I’ve been wanting to make a wall hanging design for awhile, as well as trying tapestry crochet. Let me tell you, I was really nervous about trying tapestry crochet, but it was on my list of goals for the year, so I was determined to learn how to do it. Since I’ve designed some cross stitch patterns, I wasn’t too nervous about creating a design in pixels. It was the color changes that I was worried about. When I’d tried to do knitting colorwork, I really struggled with it, so I was hesitant about doing it with crochet. I watched a few videos of how to do color changes, and decided I was ready to try it. Guess what? It wasn’t as hard as I thought! There is no reason to be fearful of it!

The Yarn

One of my favorite parts about Tapestry crocheting is that you get to choose so many fun yarn colors to use for your project. I never thought it would be hard to find the right yellow color for the sunflower petals as well as a perfect border for the edges. After some digging in my stash and searching, I found the perfect yarns for this project: Mary Maxim Starlette and Premier Everyday. These are two of my favorite affordable yarns that are so soft that I always want to wrap myself up in them. They also have a great sturdiness that works great for a wall hanging. If you don’t have them available to your though, then Red Heart Super Saver or Caron Simply Soft would be great options.

How long does it take to crochet the pattern?

Overall this pattern is a quick and easy crochet pattern that can be worked up in a day or a couple of days. I took a few breaks while I was making it, and was able to finish it over the course of a day. Since it’s only made with single crochet stitches, this pattern doesn’t involve anything really complicated. The only thing that would take more time would be the color changing, but once you do a few rows of it you’ll be sailing through it in no time. Let’s jump right into it!

Supplies

-White, Yellow, Orange, Brown, and Green Weight 4 yarn (You can use leftover skeins of yarn for this project because it doesn’t use up much of the color yarn. I used Mary Maxim Starlette Yarn and Premier Everyday. Another great option would be Red Heart Super Saver or Caron Simply Soft.)

-J/10 6mm crochet hook

-Yarn Needle

-Scissors

-Stick or dowel to hang the finished piece on

Key

-RS = Right Side

-WS = Wrong Side

-ch = Chain stitch

-sc = Single Crochet (UK double crochet)

-dec = Decrease

Notes

-This pattern is made using US crochet terminology, but the UK equivalents are listed in the Key.

-The pattern involves color changes using tapestry crochet. Experience with colorwork is recommended, but if you’re a beginner to tapestry crochet than you can totally do it!

-I recommend reading through the pattern completely before beginning just to make sure that you understand everything in the pattern.

-Color changes happen are indicated by the color appearing in parentheses. See chart for full picture of the color changes.

If you would like to add tassels to the bottom of your wall hanging then follow the tutorial below. The tassels are totally optional though, and can be left off if you’d rather have that.

Sunflower Crochet Wall Hanging: Free Crochet Pattern by ECLAIREMAKERY.COM

Step 1: Cut strands of yarn that are the same length. I cut around 36.

Step 2: Take 3 of the yarn strands to use for the tassel.

Step 3: Take your crochet hook, insert it through a stitch at the bottom, and hook yarn with your hook.

Step 4: Pull the yarn strands of yarn through the stitch till you have a loop, while still leaving the rest of the strands on the backside.

Step 5: Take strands on the back and pull them through the loop.

Step 6: Pull strands tight to finish off the tassel.

Repeat steps 3-6 till you have the desired amount of tassels.

Step 1: Take stick, dowel, or whatever you’ve chosen for your top and position it at the top of the wall hanging.

Step 2: Thread yarn needle with extra long yarn strand. Begin securing the wall hanging to the stick by looping yarn in the front, over the stick and through the back.

Step 3: Insert needle out through the front and repeat the same process all the way across the stick.

Step 4: Once you’ve finished, instead of knotting of the strand right by where you ended, you’ll take the yarn and go to the other side to knot it off so that it creates a string for the wall hanging to hang on. Then you’re all done!
