Hi!

My name is Suzanne, the designer behind Shabby Sheep Apparel.

I’m so excited to be here sharing this pattern on the E’Claire Makery Blog! Claire’s patterns are all so fun and whimsical, and I love everything she comes up with!

I didn’t grow up wanting to be a crochet designer, I never thought I’d ever have anything to do with fashion or yarn at all! I always wanted to be a teacher or an opera singer (I studied classical voice in University so it’s not an impossible dream, but a bit of a longshot!) Truth be told, I didn’t even know how to crochet until just over year ago!

My mom taught me how to knit when I was younger, and I’d occasionally pick up my needles and knit a scarf or something equally as simple. When I was pregnant with my second son, I was exhausted taking care of my one year old first born, and I decided to pick up knitting again since I was spending so much time on the couch! This led me to learn how to crochet, because I heard it could be faster than knitting. I was instantly hooked (pun fully intended)! I love crocheting so much, you will almost always find me with a hook and yarn in my hands, when I’m not taking care of my boys. I also discovered a love for designing, it’s so trilling to be able to have an idea in my head and make it a reality. The greater joy is sharing it with you!

The Velvet Skirt came to be because I love skirts! I almost always wear skirts; I love how they make me feel feminine and girly. I always hear people complain that they don’t wear skirts because they’re not comfortable, I don’t have that issue because if it’s not comfortable I don’t wear it! The Velvet skirt is SO comfortable, it’s literally like wearing a super soft blanket all day! This pattern works up quickly because of the bulky Bernat Velvet yarn and super simple beginner friendly design. It’s worked up in two rectangular pieces, and the only stitches used are simple crochet and slip stitch! If you’ve never crocheted a garment before, or you just want to be able to wear a cute soft skirt, this is the pattern for you!

My Amazon Picks

List of Abbreviations (US Terminology)

  • Sc: Single crochet
  • Sl st: Slip stitch
  • St(s): Stitch(es)
  • Ch: Chain

Gauge

11 sc across by 10 rows of sc is 4”x4”.

(The waistband gauge is 7 rows of sc is 4” because it should be stretched before measuring.)

Notes

  • Directions are written out as follows regarding size:

XS (SM, MD, LG, XL, 2XL, 3XL).

I recommend highlighting the size you are doing to avoid confusion.

  • Construction: Waistband is stitched first.  Skirt body is stitched separately. Skirt body is stitched in vertical rows which will be gathered when attached to waistband.
  • The Mattress stitch is used to seem together the body of the skirt. Sl st is an option for seaming, but I like the way the skirt falls better with a mattress stitch.

Seaming
Fold work in half and sl st the two ends together. (5, 5, 5, 5, 7, 7, 7)

Lower Waistband Edging

Body

Ch 46 (47, 49, 51, 55, 57, 61)

Row 1: Turn and sc into second ch from hook, sc across. (45, 46, 48, 50, 54, 56, 60)

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc across. (45, 46, 48, 50, 54, 56, 60)

Rows 3 to 114 (129, 141, 150, 171, 201, 225): Repeat row 2 (or until you have three times more stitches than your waistband, ie. If your waistband is 50 stitches around, the body should have 150).

Ch 1, turn, sc around the bottom edge of the skirt. (114, 129, 141, 150, 171, 201, 225)

Fold work in half and use the mattress st to seam the first and last row together.

*Optional step*

Ch 1, sc around the top edge of the skirt, sl st to first sc. Do not fasten off. (114, 129, 141, 150, 171, 201, 225) (this just makes it easier to see sts when joining to waistband, but not necessary)

Joining the Waistband and Body

With both pieces inside out, line up where both pieces were seamed together, and sl st top of body edge and bottom of waistband together.

Three body sts for every waistband st. (Insert hook into three body sts, then one waistband st, then sl st through all four sts.)
