Pumpkin Pie Slice Purse: FREE Crochet Pattern by E'Claire Makery

Everyone is ready for Christmas already, but I’m still holding onto fall until after Thanksgiving, especially with my newest FREE crochet pattern: the Pumpkin Pie Slice Purse. I’ve become recently obsessed with making food themed crochet purses, and since I hadn’t made one for fall I was inspired to make a Pumpkin Pie slice. The thing is I don’t like pumpkin pie. I’ve always loved the idea of pumpkin, whip cream, pie crust, and that perfect blend of fall spices. When it just comes down to it I don’t like it. I do however, love the look of it, and wanted to capture the classic look of pumpkin pie in a way that you could take with you everywhere.

This purse has a unconventional but super stylish triangle design that looks exactly like you’re carrying around a pumpkin pie slice. It is made up of two triangles that are joined together by a side piece that is sewn onto the triangles. The strap has a braided texture through braiding 3 long strands of chain stitches in the same colors of yarn that the pie is made out of. The purse even includes a whip cream piece that has a loop that wraps around it to close the purse! All of the details of the purse add to it’s cute and eclectic style, and make it the perfect accessory to take with you to all of your Thanksgiving or fall celebrations.

To make the purse I used my favorite yarn, Lion Brand Jeans in Khaki, along with Caron Simply Soft in . Those two yarns, along with any bulky white yarn you might have lying around to make whip cream, help capture the perfect pumpkin pie look. I love the way all of the yarns give the purse different textures, and a soft and sturdy fabric that will hold all of your precious goodies. You’re going to love it! Let’s get started on making it!

Before we sew the strap onto the purse, we’ll be braiding the three pieces together. Take the three pieces and position them with the two khaki ones on the side and the orange one in the middle. Then sew the ends of the pieces together.

Then begin braiding the pieces together all the way to the end of the chain pieces.

Once the strap pieces are completely braided together, sew the other ends together to secure them. Then set aside to sew onto the purse later.

Assembly

  1. To start we’ll assemble the purse body. To begin we’ll take the edge piece and line up one of the long edges with the long edges of the pie triangle. The short ends of the edge piece are lined up with the top of the pie.

2. Next, you’ll begin sewing the edge to the pie piece by threading your needle with the long thread you left on the pie, and insert it down through one of the stitches on the pie.

3. Insert the needle up through the next stitch on the pie piece and up through the edge. Continue steps two through three until the edge is completely sewn on. If you’ve never done this before, check out my Youtube video below to learn how to seam crochet pieces together:

4. Next we’ll be sewing on the Whip Cream. Before we sew it onto the pie, I like to secure the whip cream together. Thread the needle and then insert it up through each layer of the whip cream.

5. Then insert the needle back down through each layer. Do steps 4-5 once more. If you’ve never done a technique like this before, or are confused with the whip cream assembly, check out my Youtube video below that shows how to do it:

6. Once the whip cream is secure, turn the purse to be right side out (where the seams between the pie and edge are on the inside), and position the whip cream on the front of the purse as pictured. Thread your needle with the tail from the whip cream.

7. Insert needle down through the pumpkin piece front, and then insert it back up through the pumpkin and through a loop on the bottom of the whip cream. If you’ve never done this before, check out my Youtube video below that shows how to sew on crochet pieces:

8. Once the whip cream is sewn on, turn the front of the purse back to the wrong side. Then take the pie crust piece and position it to line up with the edge piece that you sewed on. The scalloped edge goes on top and won’t be sewn.

9. Sew it the same way that you sewed the edge piece to the pumpkin piece. Once you’ve sewn along the edge, there will be an opening at the top of the purse.

10. The next step is to sew on the strap. Take the braided strap pieces and begin sewing it on the inside of the edge side of the purse as pictured. Do the same thing for the other end of the strap.

11. After the strap is sewn on along with everything else, take the closing loop piece and position it as pictured above. This piece will act as the thing that closes the purse, and holds it in place.

12. Once the loop is in place, sew the ends of the loop together, and then sew to the back of the purse in the middle of the pie crust. Then that’s the last thing you do!
