31 Days of Candy Day 9: Salt Water Taffy Free Candy Crochet Pattern

It’s Day 9 of the 31 Days of Candy, and it’s all about Salt Water Taffy. I grew up in a small beach town where there was a bright blue candy store downtown by the water that had a huge salt water taffy painted on the side of it with bold gold letters saying “Salt Water Taffy,” which captured the attention of the foot traffic walking on the sidewalk. In the window of the store you could peek into where they made the taffy, and had dozens of different colors of taffy on display. I was always drawn to the bright swirls of color and the creative flavor combinations of taffy. However, once again because of my allergies I have never been able to eat it. I’m not too disappointed though because I don’t think I’d like the texture of taffy at all. That doesn’t mean taffy can’t inspire me though!

This taffy design quickly became one of my favorite candies that I’ve made so far. I love how Michael’s Stores Loops & Threads Kai yarn works up to create a variegated color pattern that has a soft change of color throughout the piece. For the sides of the candy I used Premier Yarns Downtown Abbey yarn, which gave the sides a nice sparkle. However, I recommend using Lion Brand Baby Soft yarn in white or another color because Premier Yarns Downton Abbey yarn has been discontinued. No matter what yarn you use, whether DK weight or worsted, this candy will come out cute either way! It’s a great beginner amigurumi pattern because it doesn’t involve any complicated stitches or techniques. Let’s get started!

Stitches Used:

Recipe Notes:

  • The salt water taffy is crocheted in continuous rounds. Mark the beginning of each round with a stitch marker.
  • Pattern uses US crochet terminology, but the UK terminology conversion is listed in the stitches used list above
  • Face is made of felt pieces that are cut out and sewn on to the crocheted piece. Download my Felt Pieces for Plushies PDF Printout for the face pieces you’ll cut out of felt. Cut out two eyes from black felt, the mouth from pink, and the tongue from red. If you don’t know how to sew on felt pieces, check out my Youtube Video Below that shows how to do it.
