It’s Day 5 of the 31 Days of Candy, and today is all about gummy worms. They’re not just any type of gummy worms: its a crocheted sour gummy worm. I don’t know about you, but I love the sugar and sour coating that is on the outside of sour gummy worms. Somehow the candy wizards perfected the right amount of sweet and sour so that you are never disappointed. Sour gummy worms are my fiancé’s and sister’s favorite candy of all time, so I knew that I had to make one for the 31 Days of Candy.
Since I wanted to do a sour gummy worm, I went on the hunt to find some sparkly yarn to capture the sparkly coating of the candy. Premier Yarn’s Downtown Abbey yarn line had the perfect range of colors that brought back all of the nostalgia of eating the candy. I managed to grab some balls of Downton Abbey yarn from Love Knitting’s website, but sadly that yarn has since been discontinued. I’ve found that Lion Brand Mandala Sparkle would be a great substitute since it has great color combinations and the metallic sparkle that makes this pattern unique. This pattern ends up being a super easy crochet pattern that is made in one piece with the face sewn on once you’re done crocheting. I’d love to see someone make a bag of these gummy worms. Let’s get started!
Materials:
- DK Weight sparkly yarn such as Lion Brand Mandala Sparkle or any other Yarn weight 3, DK yarn
- 4.00 mm crochet hook
- Black, red, and pink felt
- Black and pink embroidery floss
- embroidery needle
- scissors
- stitch marker
- stuffing
Stitches Used:
- st = stitch
- sc = single crochet (UK Double Crochet)
- dec = decrease
Recipe Notes:
- The pieces of this pattern are crocheted in continuous rounds with no joining. Mark the beginning of each round with a stitch marker. The silly sucker is worked from the top down in continuous rounds.
- Pattern uses US crochet terminology, but the UK terminology conversion is listed in the stitches used list above.
- Face is made of felt pieces that are cut out and sewn on to crocheted piece. Download my Felt Pieces for Plushies PDF Printout for the face pieces you’ll cut out of felt. Cut two eyes out of black felt, the mouth out of pink felt, and the tongue out of red felt. If you don’t know how to sew on felt pieces, see my Youtube video below that shows how to do it.
