Preppy, bold, and oh so cozy, this super chunky chevron women’s crochet winter hat is just the accessory you need for your wardrobe! The red and gold chevron pattern adds a unique twist to the classic ribbed hat, and the tapestry crochet color work creates such a beautiful fabric. Whether it’s to show school spirit, cheer on your favorite team, or you just love the colors, this free crochet hat pattern will quickly become your go to crochet beanie!

Inspiration

You ever have an idea that you can’t get out of your head? It’s like your brain is screaming at you to do something? Unfortunately for me, that always seems to strike at night when I’m trying to sleep. I often have insomnia, and one night the idea for this chevron crochet hat popped into my head. I decided to try to be productive in the midst of my insomnia, and I set out to make this crochet beanie! Who would have thought that I could be so productive during the middle of the night.

Construction

My goal with this hat design was to create a beginner tapestry crochet hat pattern. This crochet hat starts out with ribbing that is created by working in alternating back and front loops in rows. You then join the rows together, and then work in the round. Once you do that, you do tapestry crochet in the round for the main part of the beanie, and then you cinch up the top using a basting stitch. It’s all easy to pick up how to do, and if you’re worried that you might not be able to do it, don’t worry about it! I’ve created a crochet youtube video tutorial that walks you through how to crochet a chevron hat. You can find that video on my channel by clicking here: How to Crochet a Chevron Beanie.

The Yarn

Right now one of my favorite Super Bulky yarns is Lion Brand Hometown. It’s a soft and cozy weight 6 super bulky yarn that works perfectly for chunky crochet hats. The yarn creates a thick and comfortable fabric that works surprisingly well for tapestry crochet. I also love this yarn because it’s super affordable and you can get two hats from the two skeins you use to make this hat. If you have another favorite super bulky yarn you can use that too! This pattern works great with substitutions. Some of my other favorite super bulky yarns are Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick or Bernat Softee Chunky.

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing the top of the beanie closed. Thread your yarn needle, and using a basting stitch weave your yarn needle through the top of the beanie. Pull the yarn to tighten the top till it is closed. Fasten off and weave in ends. (See Video Tutorial for how to do this if you haven’t done it before.)

Optional: Sew Faux Fur Pom Pom to the top of your beanie. I have some great ones available in my shop. Shop the Pom Poms in my shop here!
