Autumn Diamonds Hat: Free Crochet Beanie Pattern

Cozy crochet hats, chunky yarn, and pom poms means it’s that time of the year when everyone is busy making themselves a crochet beanie! If you’re looking for a bold and preppy free crochet hat pattern, then you’ve come to the right place because my latest free crochet beanie pattern the Autumn Diamonds Beanie fits that exactly! This beginner friendly tapestry crochet hat pattern is simple to make while giving the look that it’s complicated. The crochet diamond pattern contrasts so well with the crochet ribbing brim of this beanie, that it will soon be your go to crochet winter hat!

Inspiration

After making my Chevron Beanie pattern, I wanted to create a similar tapestry crochet pattern that offered the same beginner friendly and easy crochet pattern with a unique motif. As I searched Pinterest for fair isle crochet patterns to use as inspiration, ones with diamonds kept sticking out to me. I’m so happy with how this tapestry crochet pattern worked up! Simplicity can be bold, and this beanie pattern shows that so well while still maintaining the chunky yarn texture.

Construction

I’m all about patterns worked in one piece, and I’m happy to say that this crochet hat is made that way! You start out with crochet ribbing that is worked flat using alternating rows of half double crochets worked in the back loops and front loops only. Once you finish the crochet brim, then you join it together to start working in the round by crocheting around the top of the brim. As you work in the round, you will be doing tapestry crochet in the round using the simple diamond pattern. (If you want to see how all of the rows work ahead of time, be sure to grab my $2 discounted PDF crochet pattern which has a color graph of all of the rows included. It’s a lifesaver if you like to use graphs for crocheting.) The hat is finished off by cinching up the top and adding a faux fur pom pom if you’d like!

The Yarn

Right now I can’t stop making hats that use super bulky yarn! I love that the cold weather means all things cozy start to come out, and that means the cozy chunky yarns make an appearance too. This crochet hat is made from two of my favorite super bulky yarns, Lion Brand Hometown USA and Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick. I combined the two because I love the way the two compliment each other so well. You can totally use the same yarn in two contrasting colors to do this. This pattern is also easy to do yarn substitutions with. You can use your favorite super bulky yarn to make this hat!

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing the top of the beanie closed. Thread your yarn needle, and using a basting stitch weave your yarn needle through the top of the beanie. Pull the yarn to tighten the top till it is closed. Fasten off and weave in ends. (See Video Tutorial for how to do this if you haven’t done it before.)

Optional: Sew Faux Fur Pom Pom to the top of your beanie. I have some great ones available in my shop. Shop the Pom Poms in my shop here!
