One of my most favorite parts about the cold weather is that it means we get to take out all of the cozy chunky crochet blankets to cuddle with by the fire. Being wrapped up in a warm blanket, reading a good book, and drinking a cup of tea is one of my favorite things! Since I hadn’t designed a chunky crochet blanket pattern yet, I knew that I wanted to make one this winter. Thus, the Ribbon Candy Blanket, my latest free crochet blanket pattern was born.
Inspiration
My biggest inspiration behind this striped crochet blanket was thinking of all of the gingerbread houses my family used to make when I was growing up. One of my favorite gingerbread house decorations was using ribbon candy on the roof or other parts of the house. There’s something so magical to me about ribbon candy. Maybe it’s the vintage feel, or the fun colors, but it always brings me back to Christmastime. This crochet blanket pattern captures all of the cozy winter feels in it!

Construction
This quick and easy crochet chunky blanket is one of the easiest blankets you’ll ever make! It uses the same crochet stitch pattern, the lemon peel stitch, to make the whole thing. If you’ve never done the lemon peel stitch before, it’s made with single and double crochets, so it’s super simple. You can learn how to do it in my Lemon Peel Stitch Crochet Tutorial. The stripes are made by switching yarn colors at the ends of the row, which means there are no complicated color changes. This crochet blanket pattern is also super customizable, so you can make it in any size you want. I’ve created a video tutorial too on my Youtube channel so that it’s even easier for you! The Yarn
To make the coziest blanket possible, I used Bernat Blanket Yarn, which makes the comfiest and warmest blankets ever! Once you cuddle up with this blanket, you’re never going to want to leave your couch. If you’ve never used Bernat Blanket yarn before, it’s a super bulky chenille like yarn that creates the coziest fabric. I highly recommend it to use for this blanket! If you don’t like using this yarn, another type of super bulky yarn I like is Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick.

- Bernat Blanket Yarn (Super Bulky weight 6 yarn) in 3 colors:
- Antique White (Main Color) 4 skeins, 220 yards
- Burgundy Plum (CC1) 1 skein, 220 yards
- Sage 1 (CC2) skein, 220 yards
- These 3 colors I got at Joann’s, but you can get other colors on Amazon here.
- 10mm crochet hook
- Scissors
Abbreviations:
- MC = Main Color
- CC1 = Contrast Color 1
- CC2 = Contrast Color 2
- Ch = Chain
- sc = single crochet
- dc = double crochet
