Inspiration

I love the look of ribbed knitted beanies, which always look so cozy. They can be worn by just about everyone, and are great with any outfit. However, since I prefer to do crochet over knitting, I wanted to try to create a ribbed crochet hat pattern that captured the same feel of the knitted hats. It had to be beginner friendly, quick to make, and easy so that you could whip up a bunch of them for markets or as gifts. If it could be unisex, even better! This hat pattern can be worn by both men and women, and I love how it turned out!

Construction

My goal for this pattern was to create one of the easiest hats to make. It is made by crocheting a rectangle, and then seaming it up to create your hat. By working the double crochet in alternating back loops only and front loops only rows, you get a ribbed pattern that looks like the ribbing you get from knitting. The overall construction of this is completely beginner friendly. Because it has a super easy construction, this works up really fast, and you can easily make it in an hour or less! The pattern comes in adult small, medium, and large. The small size is available for free here at the bottom of this post. All 3 sizes of the pattern can be found in the premium discounted ad free pdf version of the pattern. It’s perfect for gift making!

The Yarn

To make this crochet hat pattern, I used two of my favorite super bulky yarns, Lion Brand Hometown USA and Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick. I love both of these yarns because not only do they come in a wide variety of colors, but they also are really soft. Lion Brand Hometown USA is a great budget friendly super bulky yarn, and if you get it at Walmart it’s usually just $2.97 a skein. The Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick is a wool acrylic blend that comes in great colors, and is perfect for cold weather projects. You can’t even notice there’s some wool yarn in it because it is so soft. If you want the coziest hat, I highly recommend either of these yarns!

Two Toned Beanie Crochet Pattern (Size Small):

To start this beanie, you’ll be chaining with two different colors.

Row 1: Starting with MC, ch 19, switch to CC and drop MC to use for next row, and ch 7, ch 2, turn, starting in 3rd ch from hook, dc 5 using CC, dc 19 using MC

Row 2: ch 2, turn, (MC) dc 19 in blo, (CC) dc 5 in blo

Row 3: ch 2, turn, (CC) dc 5 in flo, (MC) dc 19 in flo

Rows 4-19: repeat rows 2-3

Once you’re done crocheting, you’ll put the right sides together, and sl st along the part where the first and last row are together. Then fasten off, and sew up the top by using a basting stitch to pull it closed. See video tutorial (coming out later today) for details on how to do it.

Now you’re all done with your hat! I hope you and your loved ones stay nice and cozy with this two toned beanie! If you make a hat of your own, be sure to tag me on Instagram @eclairemakery and use the hashtag #eclairemakery. I’d love to share your projects!
