Intro to Sarah

Hey y’all! I’m Sarah, the maker behind Sarah’s Yarn.

I first picked up a set of knitting needles in high school, as something to do during musical theater rehearsals when I wasn’t in the scene. Made a couple of scarves, and then set down both yarn and needles for about a decade! I picked them up again shortly after meeting the man who would become my husband. I was teaching elementary school at the time and wanted to make his Christmas gift by hand (naively I thought this would be less expensive than buying him something). By then I had basically forgotten everything I learned in high school about the craft and was starting from scratch, so the simple ribbed scarf I was making him wasn’t done until about a month and a half after the holiday (he teases me about it to this day)! And once again I put down both yarn and needles.

Fast forward a few years, and we’d moved to the Pacific Northwest. We were at a friend’s house watching football, and someone was making crocheted granny squares while we watched. I was fascinated! It looked so much faster than knitting, and I was determined to try. So I got myself to my local yarn store and bought my first hook and a few skeins of yarn. But I only learned single crochets and so rapidly got bored. UNTIL…I saw some of the amigurumi and baby blankets my friend was able to make. That was it. I was hooked.

These days I most make things as gifts for friends and family, but have been lucky enough to turn many of those gives into patterns available for sale in my Ravelry store. Many of my patterns are for/inspired by my toddler or friends’ and family members’ little ones, and every dollar I make on Ravelry goes straight into an education fund for my munchkin.

About the Pattern

This brings me to the patten Claire has been gracious enough to post on her blog for you: the Splish Splash Bathmat!

My son loooooooooves bathtime (who doesn’t), but when we came down to visit my parents, there wasn’t a good bathmat in their guest bathroom for him to sit/stand/play on while the tub filled up. I wanted to make something cheerful and fun that would make me smile, and thus the Splish Splash Bathmat was born.

The Yarn

Knowing that I wanted something I could throw in the laundry each week, I went with Bernat Maker Home Dec yarn, but really any bulky yarn will work for this pattern. I’d recommend cotton over acrylic just because it is more absorbent, but if this is more for decoration than use in your household, go with whatever colors make you happiest.

New to Tapestry Crochet or Crochet Crochet Color Work?

When I was first learning how to do crochet color work, I often felt so lost having to learn how to do color changes and reading crochet graphs. It can seem so intimidating to learn a new crochet skill! If you’re new to tapestry crochet or color work, then I’ve got just the resource for you.

Here on Claire’s blog, she has two free crochet tutorials for how to do tapestry crochet and intarsia crochet, which are the two most common crochet color work techniques. They’ll walk you through what each technique is, how to read crochet graphs, how to change colors in crochet, and a bunch of other tips she has for color work! You can find them here on her blog at:

– The Beginner’s Guide to Tapestry Crochet: (This technique is used when you would like to carry your yarn, and the color work is close together. I used this technique for the Splish Splash Rug.)

– The Beginner’s Guide to Intarsia Crochet:This technique is used when you don’t want to carry your yarn, and instead would like to use yarn bobbins.)

 

Supplies:

• Yarn: 2 skeins of Bernat Maker Home Dec or other bulky yarn in your main color and 1 skein in an accent color
• Hook: 5mm
• Scissors
• Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
• OPTIONAL: Rug gripper so your bathmat doesn’t slide across the bathroom floor. I bought this one from Amazon and cut it down to size.

Abbreviations:

  • FSC: Foundation Single Crochet
  • SC: Single Crochet
  • Ch: Chain
  • Bead Stitch (see notes)
  • Sl St: Slip Stitch
  • MC = main color
  • AC = accent color

Special Stitches:

• Bead Stitch – skip a stitch and DC in next. Yarn over (YO), insert hook around prior DC, YO and pull through – 3 loops on hook. YO, insert hook around prior DC again, YO, and pull through – 5 loops on hook. YO, insert hook around prior DC again, YO, and pull through – 7 loops on hook. Pull through 6 loops on hook. YO and pull through remainingloops on hook.

• You’ll carry your second yarn throughout the entire bathmat, except for the final row of the border. This will give it additional heft and prevent weaving in ends as much as possible. Alexa, weave in my ends!
 
Gauge: 16 st x 12 rows = 4” sq
 
Finished size: 30” wide x 17.5” tall
 
Pattern Notes:
  • The pattern involves color changes using tapestry or intarsia crochet. Experience with color work is recommended, but if you’re a beginner to tapestry crochet than you can totally do it! Row 66: In MC (continuing to carry AC), SC around the edges of your mat, putting 3 SC in each corner. Switch to AC to close your last stitch and SL ST to first stitch of row. This forms the base row of your bead stitch border. You’ll now stop carrying MC. Leave a 5” tail to weave in later.

Row 67: Ch 3. Sk first stitch. Bead stitch around (remember that when using the Bead Stitch, you skip every other stitch). SL ST to first stitch of round and fasten off.
