Mount Olympus Blanket: Free Tapestry Crochet Blanket Pattern

Intro to DarkNTwistyHousewife
 
Hey all, my name is Torie and I’m behind DarkNTwistyHousewife. A little about myself, is that like most of you (I would guess), have a slight yarn addiction, and am always reaching for the next project. I have 2 kids, who adore sitting with me in my craft room and like using blankets and such after I’m finished making them. O, they also are covered in hair and have four legs, yep you guessed it, they are cats. I also am getting married at the end of the month to an awesome guy who definitely fuels my yarn addiction. We even go yarn shopping almost every time we go out shopping, if that isn’t love I don’t know what is. We have traveled a bit and actually will be calling Florida home later this year, so there are all kinds of changes happening for me currently. 
 
One thing that hasn’t changed though, is how excited I am about this pattern. Claire approached me about it when it was still in the WIP stage. This was a lot of fun and I enjoyed it. The yarn itself is very soft and warm but not heavy. The design was inspired by, honestly, triangles. I scoured the internet for a while when I had the idea of a ton of triangles, wallpaper and many other things were looked at, until finally I came across something I really liked. So then I went to work making a chart for what I was looking for. This was actually a bit of a long process as far as making it, I ended up biting off a bit more than I could chew and had way too many projects going at once, so it was put down for a couple of months, and then picked back up again. The end result was very much so worth the wait. 
 
Construction
 
The construction honestly wasn’t as bad as I thought when I first completed plotting it. It’s worked using a single stitch throughout the whole pattern, it’s just a matter of when to change colors and when not to. I didn’t use the bobbin method on this one, even though it’s worked using the tapestry technique. I like bobbins, but this yarn is very easy to maneuver and was great to work with even just using the two balls to weave in and out. 
 
The Yarn
 
This yarn is actually from The Hook Nook, it’s a lighter weight bulky yarn. It’s not very heavy, but still has the heft to be able to be classified as a bulky weight. The Yummy yarn is just exactly as the name says, yummy. It’s very soft for a wool blend and the color names that I used are just awesome. The black I used is called charcoal toothpaste, I mean can you think of a better name for charcoal yarn? I know I can’t. I actually got the yarn solely because of the name and decided to use the charcoal in this pattern afterward. My cats have kind of adopted this blanket now. It’s draped across the couch, because it’s my largest project to date, so it is front and center. They have claimed it now, so it’s half covered up now because they adore it. I would very much so be willing to say the yarn is definitely kitty cat approved. 
 
This pattern definitely has been a turning point in my pattern designing as it pushed the envelope to anything I’d ever done. I enjoyed it, and actually have plotted two other large blanket patterns, because…well its become an addiction I guess. I never thought I would be making tapestry blanket patterns, but here we are. Definitely the largest thank you goes to Claire because I got to test one of her patterns to get over my initial scares of the technique. It made everything much less scary the first time trying something new having someone there to ask questions to. After I completed my first project, I understood why she makes so many awesome things using this technique and why I see so many in groups. They are truely priceless gifts for yourself or anyone you love.

  • 2035 yards of bulky yarn
    • Main Color- 1110 yards (6 balls of The Hook Nook Yummy)

Abbreviations:

  • Ch = chain
  • MC = main color
  • CC = contrast color
  • hdc = half double crochet

Gauge Swatch:
Ch 11, hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each stitch across, ch 1 turn
Row 1: hdc in first stitch and each stitch across ch 1, turn
Repeat Row 1 4 times.
5 HDC rows should measure 4.5” across x 3” high

Pattern Notes:

  • Chain 1 before the start of every row as your turn chain. This does not count as a stitch.
  • This is worked using tapestry crochet. This means you’ll be changing colors but carrying the yarn across the project

  • The pattern involves color changes using tapestry or intarsia crochet. Experience with color work is recommended, but if you’re a beginner to tapestry crochet than you can totally do it!
