Merry and Bright Classic Striped Crochet Christmas Stocking: Free Crochet Pattern

The holidays are almost here, which means it’s time to start crocheting Christmas decor! For years I never made any crochet Christmas stockings, but this year that is changing. I’m so excited to present my latest free crochet pattern: the Merry and Bright Crochet Christmas Stocking! This crochet stocking pattern is inspired by the classic and vintage colors of Christmas decor in the 50s. It’s a beginner friendly pattern, so if you’ve never crocheted a stocking before, you can crochet this easy stocking pattern! Plus it’s made in one piece, and has a video tutorial so you’ll be able to whip one up for the whole family.

Inspiration

When it comes to Christmas decor, I’m a huge fan of vintage Christmas decorations. I love the colors, the style, and how it adds a bright and colorful splash to any part of your home. When I saw the vintage inspired Christmas line at Joann Fabrics this year, I knew I wanted my Christmas line to have the same vintage flair. So I set out to find some fun yarn colors that would have you reminiscing about the classic colored Christmas lights. This crochet stocking pattern totally fit with the theme I wanted to go for!

Construction

One of the biggest things that stopped me from crocheting stockings in the past was that I thought they were too complicated. The thought of crocheting a heel made me shudder, and I didn’t even want to attempt it. Well guess what? It’s a lot easier than I thought! If that has been preventing you from crocheting one, this one is the perfect intro one.

This crochet stocking is made in one piece, has beginner friendly construction, and I’ve created a video tutorial to show you how to do each step. That way you can have stress free Christmas decor so you can focus on everything else. View my video tutorial on my Youtube Channel at: How to Crochet the Merry and Bright stocking. It’s such a fun pattern to make, and you can customize the stripes and color work to be just how you want it! You can grab a discounted ad free PDF for just $2 in my Etsy and Ravelry stores!

Yarn

To make this pattern, I used Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti Pilling yarn. Not only does it come in awesome array of colors, but it also is anti pilling, which means that it doesn’t fuzz up as easily so the stocking will last longer. This is my favorite go to base yarn for all of my latest designs, because of its colorways and durability. If you don’t have access to the Basic Stitch yarn, some of my other affordable favorites are: Red Heart Super Saver, Caron Simply Soft, or Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice. I also used some Lion Brand Go For Faux yarn, but if you don’t like Faux Fur yarn you can always use another weight 6 yarn or just do more rows with your worsted weight.

Fasten off Color 1, leaving a tail for sewing. Sew up the heel using the video tutorial if you’ve never seamed a heel before.

Rest of stocking:

We’ll now be picking up Color 2, and continuing the rest of the stocking. Fasten off Color 1. Starting off of where rnd 30 ended.

Fasten off Color 1, and we’ll be switching to the Lion Brand Go For Faux and the 9mm hook. If you don’t want to have the Faux Fur in it, you can use a normal worsted weight yarn and repeat Rnd 46-48.

Rnd 49-50: ch 2, *dc 1, sk 2, repeat from * 23 times, join with sl st to ch 2 at beginning of rnd

When you’ve finished the last round, ch 7, and join with a sl st to the first ch to create a loop to hang your stocking with.
