May Flowers Blanket CAL Week 4 – Zinnia Block

Week 4 of the May Flowers Blanket Crochet Along is here! How has time gone by so fast, and we are already working on the fourth block of the May Flowers Blanket. This week’s block is a Zinnia! As I looked for different summer flowers to include in this blanket, a red zinnia with pink edges stood out to me, and I knew that I needed to create a crochet zinnia pattern as a part of my tapestry crochet blanket.

My Inspiration

Zinnias are such a unique flower that they were exactly the flower I was look to create a crochet pattern for! I’ve found that I’m always drawn to flowers with lots of color, and as I browsed the different colors of zinnias a red one with pink tips on the petals caught my eye. Red and pink always are my favorites, so this was the perfect look to have for my crochet flower blanket!

The Yarn

For this block, I found one of my favorite yarns that I’ve used for this tapestry crochet blanket. While I was at Hobby Lobby searching for yarn, I found a red yarn that had pink flecks speckled throughout it. I was in love with it right away! It gives such great texture for this crochet flower, and I love the way it compliments the pink yarn I chose for the edges. If you don’t have a Hobby Lobby near you, I found some awesome substitutes: Red Heart Ombre in Anemone or Sea Coral. You don’t have to do it in red though! Any colors of yarn would work for this beautiful tapestry crochet flower!

Supplies:

Stitches Used/Abbreviations:

  • RS = Right Side
  • WS = Wrong Side
  • ch = Chain stitch (tutorial)
  • hdc = Half Double Crochet (UK half treble crochet) (tutorial)

Pattern Notes:

  • This pattern is made using US crochet terminology, but the UK equivalents are listed in the Key.
  • If you come across a part where it’s just a color in between two commas, then that stands for just one half double crochet.
  • The pattern involves color changes using tapestry crochet. Experience with color work is recommended, but if you’re a beginner to tapestry crochet than you can totally do it!
  • For a complete color chart of each of the blocks, along with the written pattern and some bonus blocks, check out the 39 page premium pdf here.
  • I recommend reading through the pattern completely before beginning just to make sure that you understand everything in the pattern.
  • Color changes happen are indicated by the color appearing in parentheses. See chart for full picture of the color changes.
  • The arrows at the beginning of the rows indicate what direction the row is worked on in the chart.
  • If you’ve never done tapestry crochet before, I’ve created a beginner’s guide to tapestry crochet that shows you how to do it. See the written and photo tutorial at The Beginner’s Guide to Tapestry Crochet.
