How to Attach Crochet Appliques Invisibly

How to Attach Crochet Appliques Invisibly

Crochet appliques are often made to attach to other crochet projects like blankets or sweaters. Once you’ve made them, the question you might have is how do you attach them? In this step by step crochet tutorial I’ll teach you how to attach crochet appliques two ways, one of which makes the seams invisible! They are beginner friendly techniques with no sewing skills required.

When it comes to attaching and seaming crochet appliques to your projects, there are two different ways to do it:

  1. Use a matching yarn for the applique to seam
  2. Use an invisible seam for the stitches

In this step by step crochet tutorial, I’ll show you how to seam them both ways!

How to Attach Crochet Appliques

Supplies Needed:

  • Yarn Needle
  • Yarn (either matching the color of your applique, or any color you’d like if you’re using the invisible technique)

Before you begin seaming your piece on, you will want to position it on your square.

You can weave in all of your ends before attaching the applique, or you can use the ends to seam it instead of using a separate yarn strand.

If you aren’t using your yarn ends to seam, then cut a strand of yarn and thread your needle.

Seaming with a Matching Color

If your applique mostly uses the same color on the edges, then you can use a matching color of yarn to attach the applique.

Step 1: Insert your needle up through a stitch on the bottom (left photo).

Step 2: Then up through a stitch on the applique (right photo).

Step 3: Then insert your needle down through the next stitch over, and pull through.

Repeat steps 1-3 till you have sewn all around the applique.

Attaching the Crochet Applique Invisibly

To attach your crochet appliques invisibly, do the following steps:

Step 1: Insert needle up through a stitch on the bottom. Instead of inserting it through the applique, go through two back loops and pull yarn through.

Step 2: Insert needle down through the next stitch on the square and pull yarn through.

Repeat steps 1-2 all the way around the applique. Then fasten yarn off when finished.

I hope that this tutorial was helpful for you, and now you feel ready to start sewing appliques onto your crochet projects!

Happy stitching,

Claire
