This crochet pattern was a special request from my son Ollie, who the pattern is named after. He is obsessed with robots! Almost his whole life is centered around his love of robots. Of course I had to design a cuddly crochet pattern for him.

Construction

When designing this amigurumi pattern I tried to keep the construction as low sew as possible. The first part to make is the head, followed by the arms. Then the legs are made in two pieces, and then joined together to have the body worked off of them. While working the body, the arms are attached by crocheting through them onto the body. Next the ears and antennae are made before attaching all the pieces together.

Yarn I used

To make this robot amigurumi, I used Premier Yarns Parfait Chunky, which is a super bulky weight 6 chenille yarn. The great thing about this crochet pattern is that you can make it with any yarn weight. I think it would be so cute in a worsted weight or even a DK weight yarn!

Yarn

Parfait Chunky (weight 6 super bulky yarn, 100% polyester chenille yarn) in 5 colors:

  • Fog (Color A)
  • Key Lime (Color B)
  • Cardinal (Color C)
  • Tangerine (Color D)
  • Cream (Color E)

– Red worsted weight yarn

Approximate Yarn Yardage

  • Fog: 100yds
  • Key Lime: 10 yds
  • Cardinal: 10 yds
  • Tangerine: 10 yds
  • Red worsted weight yarn: 5 yds

Extra Supplies:

  • 12mm safety eyes
  • Yarn needle
  • Polyester Fiberfill stuffing

Abbreviations

  • Ch(s) = chain
  • st(s) = stitch(es)
  • sl st = slip st
  • sc = single crochet
  • rnd = round
  • ( ) = stitch count at end of row or round

Pattern Notes:

  • This pattern uses US crochet terminology.
  • This pattern is worked in multiple pieces with minimal seaming.
  • The legs are worked separately and then joined to work the rest of the body off of it. The arms are joined while working the body.
  • To make a french knot for the control panel buttons, see the tutorial here.

Robot Amigurumi Crochet Pattern

Head

The head begins working in rows, and then it will be worked in rnds around the square, before ending in rows again by working the bottom of the head off of one side.

Row 1: Ch 11, sc 10 (10 scs)

Rows 2-8: Sc across (10 scs)

You’ll now begin working in rnds.

You’ll now begin to work in the rnd around the square you just made.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, turn, sc 10, sc 8 on next edge, sc 10 on the edge with the starting chs, sc 8 on next edge, join with sl st (36 sc)

Next 7 rnds: Ch 1, turn, sc around, join with sl st to ch 1 at beginning of rnd. (36 sc)

Next part will be worked in rows off of one edge of the head.

Row 1: Ch 1 turn, sc 10

Repeat last row 8 more times.

Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Attach eyes and sew on mouth (make sure the open side of the head is positioned to be the bottom of the head). I added some whites on the eyes by using white yarn to sew along the edge of one side of the eye.

Once the face is done, then you’ll seam up the bottom of the head. Stuff the head till is is full, then fold over the flap to line up each edge with the other edges of the head. Seam the edges together then fasten off.

Arms (Make 2)

Arms are worked in continuous rnds.

Rnd 1: Starting with chosen color (I used color B), Ch 2, sc 6 in 2nd ch (6 sc)

Rnd 2: Sc 2 in each sc around (12 sc)

Rnd 3: sc around (12 sc)

Rnd 4: Dec 6 (6 sc)

Switch to Color A.

Rnds 5-9: sc around (6 sc)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Legs/Body:

Rnd 1: Ch 2, sc 6 in 2nd ch (6 sc)

Rnd 2: Sc 2 in each sc around (12 sc)

Rnd 3: *Sc 1, sc 2 in next st, repeat from * around (18 sc)

Rnds 4-9: Sc around (18 sc)

Fasten off and repeat rnds 1-9 for a second leg.

On the second leg, after rnd 9, we will attach the legs together to form the body. To begin the body do the following working off of the 2nd leg for body:

Rnd 1: Ch 2, join legs together by sc 1 in one of the stitches on the leg, sc around leg back to the chs, sc 1 in 2 chs, sc around next leg, sc 1 in the other side of the 2 chs (40 sts)

Rnd 2: Sc around (40 sts)

Rnd 3: *Sc 6, dec, repeat from * around (35 sts)

Rnds 4-5: Sc around (35 sts)

Rnd 6: *Sc 5, dec, repeat from * around (30 sts)

Rnd 7: Sc around (30 sts)

Rnd 8: *Sc 4, dec, repeat from * around (25 sts)

Rnd 9: Sc 7, line up first arm stitches with next 3 sc, sc 3 (for each of the sc, do it through both the arm and the body sc), sc 8, sc 3 through next arm (for each of the sc, do it through both the arm and the body sc), sc 4 (25 sts)

Rnd 10: *Sc 3, Dec, repeat from * around (20 sts)

Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing to head.

Antennae

The antennae are worked in continuous rnds.

Rnd 1: Starting with a colored yarn (I used color D), Ch 2, sc 6 in 2nd ch (6 sc)

Rnd 2: Sc 2 in each sc around (12 sc)

Switch to Color A.

Rnd 3: sc around (12 sc)

Rnd 4: Dec 6 (6 sc)

Rnds 5-7: sc around (12 sc)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Ears

The ears are worked in continuous rnds. Use whichever color you’d like. I used Color C.

Rnd 1: Ch 2, sc 6 in 2nd ch (6 sc)

Rnd 2: Sc 2 in each sc around (12 sc)

Rnd 3: sc around (12 sc)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Control Panel

The control panel is worked flat in rows. I used Color E for mine.

Row 1: Ch 10, sc 8 (8 sc)

Rows 2-4: ch 1, turn, sc across (8 sc)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Heart

The heart is worked flat in rows. Use a worsted weight yarn for this.

Row 1: Ch 3, sc 2 (2 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc 2 in each sc (4 sc)

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, hdc 1, sl st 2, hdc 1 (2 hdc, 2 sl sts)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Assembly

Start by assembling the control panel pieces. I sewed the red heart on the front to the right side of the panel. Then I did 3 french knots (see tutorial here) with different colors of yarn to be the buttons of the robot. Once the control panel is all finished, center it on the chest of the body and sew it on.

Next seam the ears and antennae to the head.

Finally, attach the body and head together. If you feel like the neck area of your robot needs some more support, either stuff it fuller or you can make a 3rd arm to position around the inner part of the neck before sewing to the head.
