Audrey Velvet Ear Warmer Free Crochet Pattern

Audrey Velvet Earwarmer FREE Crochet Pattern by E'Claire Makery

Anyone else’s ears get so cold during winter that they feel frozen and get a headache? I sure do! I always need some sort of ear warmer when I walk outside during the winter, otherwise my poor ears almost freeze off. After years of crocheting, I finally decided it was about time that I create a pattern for an ear warmer. I needed a quick and easy project to make for my markets, and an ear warmer seemed like a good option. Also, I was so in love with Velvet yarn that I wanted to create as many patterns as I could with it.

Enter in, the Audrey Velvet Earwarmer! I love the classic Audrey Hepburn movies like the movie Sabrina. Her style and class are so enchanting, and her ability to rock head scarves inspired this design. It has all of the luxury of Audrey Hepburn by being made of Velvet yarn, and has the sweet yet sophisticated design that she would have worn.

My goal with this pattern was to not only make it with Audrey Hepburn’s style, but to also create a super easy beginner earwarmer pattern that anyone could make. Using only double crochet and bobble stitches, this pattern is a perfect last minute gift or market item. It’s also a great project to make for yourself when you want something quick to make. The Bernat Velvet Yarn helps it work up in no time, and provides a softness that cannot be beat at all! It’s so soft that you’re friends and family will want you to make them each one. Let’s get started!

  • There are two versions of this pattern, one that uses just chains to begin, and another that uses a foundational double crochet. The first one is easier, but the second one has more even stretchiness.
  • This pattern can fit any size of women’s head based off of how tight or loose you do your chain stitches. Tighter stitches will make it closer to a small/medium, and very loose stitches will make it a large.
  • The pattern is made in rounds using joining.
  • This pattern is crocheted using US crochet terminology. UK terminology is included in the stitches used list.

Pattern:

Version 1: Using chains to start

Rnd 1: Ch 45 (I did tighter chains but you could do looser ones for a bigger fit), join with sl st to the first ch, ch 2, turn, and dc 44, join with sl st to ch 2

Rnd 2: Ch 2, *bobble, dc 1,* repeat 21 more times, sl st to join (44)

Rnd 3: ch 2, *dc 1, bobble,* repeat 21 more times, sl st to join (44)

Rnd 4: Ch 2, *bobble, dc 1,* repeat 21 more times, sl st to join (44)

Rnd 5: ch 2, dc 44, sl st to join (44)

Fasten off leaving a long tail to create a knot. Then wrap the tail tightly around the part of the ear warmer where the rounds were joined, and secure it by fastening it off with a knot followed by weaving in ends.

Version 2:

Rnd 1: FDC 37, join with sl st to first st (37

Rnd 2: Ch 2, *bobble, dc 1,* repeat 17 more times, sl st to join (36)

Rnd 3: ch 2, *dc 1, bobble,* repeat 17 more times, sl st to join (36)

Rnd 4: Ch 2, *bobble, dc 1,* repeat 17 more times, sl st to join (36)

Rnd 5: ch 2, dc 36, sl st to join (36)

Fasten off leaving a long tail to create a knot. Then wrap the tail tightly around the part of the ear warmer where the rounds were joined, and secure it by fastening it off with a knot followed by weaving in ends.
