How to Crochet the Falling Leaves Beanie

Oh fall, there’s something about the autumn air, fall leaves, and pumpkin spice that makes me feel so comforted and cozy. Maybe it’s because I was born in fall, but fall is definitely my favorite time of year. If I could stay in one season, it would probably be fall! I tried to capture my love of fall in my latest tapestry crochet beanie pattern, The Falling Leaves Beanie. This free crochet hat pattern uses worsted weight yarn, and is a great crochet hat for beginners. It’s a single crochet beanie that uses tapestry crochet to create a beautiful autumn design on the hat.

My Inspiration

One of my favorite parts about fall weather is seeing the beautiful colors that the leaves turn into. The deep reds, oranges, and yellows create such beauty, and as they fall they look so graceful. I wanted to capture those feelings in this crochet hat pattern using richly colored fall colors. The crochet beanie features three leaves on it that capture the sense of fall and the beautiful leaves.

Construction

This is the perfect crochet hat for beginners! It’s made in one piece, so you don’t have to worry about sewing pieces together. The tapestry crochet is also easier because you do tapestry crochet in the round. I created a video tutorial that shows you how to make ribbing for the brim of the hat, and then join it together to work off of it with the rest of the rounds. You only need to know how to double and single crochet to make this pattern, and even if you’re a beginner to tapestry crochet you can make it! If you get stuck on the tapestry crochet part with the leaves, you can check out my Beginner’s Guide to Tapestry Crochet to get some practice with this technique.

The Yarn

For this hat, I chose Lion Brand Heartland, which has some of the deepest and richest colors I’ve seen in yarn. The two colors I picked were Kings Canyon and Yosemite, which are the two national parks that are closest to my home. Both have such a deep connection with me, and are some of the most beautiful places during the fall season. The forest green and burnt orange colors create such a beautiful fall color scheme that I totally want to design with again! The yarn itself is amazing to work with. I love how the worst weight yarn glides over my hook, and doesn’t get caught on them at all. It creates such a soft fabric that I want to wear all the time now! If you’ve never used this yarn, you’ll definitely want to give it a try for this pattern. Some other affordable yarns that would be great for this are

Working With Clover Amour Hooks and Pom Pom Maker

I am so excited to say that this pattern was sponsored by Clover! They sent me some of their Amour crochet hooks to work with, which are lightweight ergonomic crochet hooks. The ergonomic handles on the hooks help prevent wrist and arm pain while working, and they worked perfectly with the yarn I used. You can easily speed through this project using them!

I also had the pleasure of using their Clover Pom Pom Maker to create the pom pom for this crochet beanie pattern. It was my first time using a pom pom maker, and now I can never go back to not using one!

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing the top of the beanie closed. Thread your yarn needle, and using a basting stitch weave your yarn needle through the top of the beanie. Pull the yarn to tighten the top till it is closed. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Optional: Create Pom Pom using the Clover Pom Pom Maker and sew to top of beanie. To see how to use this tool, skip towards the end of my video tutorial for the pattern.

Now you’re all done! You did it!
