May Flowers Blanket CAL Week 2 – Dahlia Block

Welcome back to week two of the May Flowers Blanket crochet along! I’ve loved getting to see all of the beautiful daisy blocks from week 1 that were being made in the Our Crochet Community Facebook Group. This week we’re working on one of my all time favorite flowers a dahlia! I love the intricacies and wide range of colors that dahlia’s have. Every dahlia has a unique color to it, and for this block you can crochet whatever colors you want for this blanket!

Inspiration

One of my favorite dahlia types is the ones with blush pink and yellow petals. As I created this week’s block, I want to try to capture those beautiful colors. How to transfer those to a tapestry crochet blanket though? I decided to have yellow petals outlined by pink with green leaves on the side to help make a beautiful crochet flower graphgan block. Yes, you have to change colors more, but this block is easy since you do the same thing over and over.

The Yarn

For this crochet flower, I used a combination of Hobby Lobby Soft & Sleek, Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn, and Premier Everyday. I found a pink and yellow combination that complimented each other, and the orange yarn in the center was the perfect compliment to the colors. If you don’t want to use the same colors that I did, you can totally do a different combination. Dahlias come in all sorts of colors, and it’s the perfect flower to experiment with! Doing different shades of red, combinations of purples, or any other combination would be so fun to crochet.

Supplies List:

Stitches Used:

  • RS = Right Side
  • WS = Wrong Side
  • ch = Chain stitch
  • hdc = Half Double Crochet (UK half treble crochet)

Pattern Notes:

  • This pattern is made using US crochet terminology, but the UK equivalents are listed in the Key.
  • If you come across a part where it’s just a color in between two commas, then that stands for just one half double crochet.
  • The pattern involves color changes using tapestry crochet. Experience with color work is recommended, but if you’re a beginner to tapestry crochet than you can totally do it!
  • For a complete color chart of each of the blocks, along with the written pattern and some bonus blocks, check out the 39 page premium pdf here.
  • I recommend reading through the pattern completely before beginning just to make sure that you understand everything in the pattern.
  • Color changes happen are indicated by the color appearing in parentheses. See chart for full picture of the color changes.
  • The arrows at the beginning of the rows indicate what direction the row is worked on in the chart.
  • If you’ve never done tapestry crochet before, I’ve created a beginner’s guide to tapestry crochet that shows you how to do it. You can view the written and photo tutorial here, or watch the video below.
